About Tazewell TRIAD

TRIAD’s Beginnings

Tazewell County TRIAD

Tazewell County TRIAD is a nonprofit organization that brings seniors, law enforcement, and professionals that provide services to seniors together. Our purpose is to “enhance the quality of life and safety for senior citizens, through information and resources provided by law enforcement and service providers.”

Nationally, the TRIAD concept started in the 1970’s, in Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana. TRIAD has since grown to become a national program, with many states and communities having their own TRIAD programs and groups. The original choice of the word “TRIAD,” which means “group of three,” was chosen, because it then represented the National Sheriff’s Association, the International Association of the Chiefs of Police, and the American Association of Retired Persons. These groups agreed the crime-related needs of the elderly could best be met by a cooperative effort.

Tazewell TRIAD's History

TRIAD has a program philosophy that focuses on reducing crime against senior citizens and enhancing the law enforcement services to these individuals.

The Illinois State TRIAD was formed in 1990, in recognition of the need to guide a statewide response to the critical issue of crime against older persons. The Illinois State TRIAD was one of the first statewide TRIAD’s in the nation.

The Tazewell TRIAD was formed in 1989, when the  three founding groups previously mentioned signed a cooperative agreement to encourage the growth of local TRIAD’s, and to sponsor annual meetings to provide information and support to local community leaders.

Today, Tazewell TRIAD includes:  law enforcement, senior volunteers, and businesses and agencies that provide services to the senior community coming together to assess the needs and concerns of senior citizens in our area, and find ways to address those needs.
